India experienced a surge in electricity demand, reaching an all-time high for the third consecutive day due to scorching temperatures and widespread heatwave conditions. The peak power demand peaked at 265.44 GW during solar hours, surpassing the previous record of 260.45 GW. Additionally, the non-solar peak demand also hit a record high of 247.21 GW on May 18.
Despite the increased consumption, the country’s electricity supply remains stable with sufficient generation capacity and fuel stocks available. The Power Ministry assured that systems are in place to manage the seasonal rise in electricity consumption efficiently. Furthermore, thermal power plants currently hold 50.9 million tonnes of coal stock, ensuring smooth coal supplies with logistical support from the railways.
The rise in electricity demand coincides with forecasts of above-normal temperatures in various regions of India. Minister of State Jitendra Singh advised the public not to panic over heatwave predictions and recommended following basic precautions during the summer season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts above-normal temperatures in southern, northeast, and northwest India, with heatwave conditions expected in specific areas.
