India’s energy resilience was on full display during the recent Strait of Hormuz disruption, experts noted. Despite initial concerns due to heavy reliance on imported crude oil, the country managed to maintain uninterrupted fuel supplies without significant impact on consumers. This success was attributed to proactive government measures, diversified sourcing, and investments in energy security infrastructure.
Former Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Chairman M.K. Surana highlighted India’s ability to avert severe fuel shortages during the crisis. While other nations resorted to emergency measures like fuel rationing and work-from-home mandates, India did not face such drastic steps. Surana credited this resilience to collaborative efforts involving the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, oil marketing companies, and government agencies.
Maintaining uninterrupted domestic cooking gas supplies was a key focus during the disruption. Through a combination of supply-side and demand-side measures, India ensured the prioritization of household consumption. Diversifying crude oil imports from over 40 countries played a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of the Hormuz disruption and bolstering the country’s long-term energy security.
