India’s External Affairs Ministry Secretary, Sibi George, met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss reforms within the international organization, focusing on advocating for the Global South. George reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to multilateralism during the meeting, aligning with Guterres’ emphasis on this principle amid current challenges. Additionally, they deliberated on New Delhi’s efforts to enhance development in the Global South through initiatives like the India-UN Development Partnership Fund.
During his visit to the UN headquarters, George engaged with various UN officials and diplomats from multiple countries, highlighting India’s significant role as the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. Discussions with key UN figures, including Atul Khare and Khaled Khiari, underscored India’s unwavering support for peacekeeping endeavors. Financial concerns within the UN, particularly regarding peacekeeping operations, were addressed in talks with Chandramouli Ramanathan, the UN’s finance chief.
Furthermore, George participated in discussions on UN reform and the UN80 Initiative, aimed at ensuring the organization remains pertinent in addressing global challenges as it approaches its 80th anniversary. Advocating for greater representation of the Global South, George emphasized the need for inclusivity, especially in the permanent category, during negotiations for Security Council reforms. At various forums, he championed the developmental goals of the Global South, calling for a more equitable and responsive international finance system to bridge the substantial funding gap hindering the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
