India’s finished steel production in June reached 13.5 million tonnes, marking a 3.8% increase from the same period last year. The country’s total production for the April-June quarter of the current financial year rose to 40.6 million tonnes, showing a 4.9% growth compared to the previous year’s figures. Additionally, India’s crude steel production for the same quarter increased by 3% to 42.1 million tonnes.

Demand for finished steel in India surged by 25.6% in June, driven by major infrastructure projects in sectors like highways, railways, and ports. The country’s crude steel production in June stood at 14.1 million tonnes, up by 4.5% from the previous year. India’s crude steelmaking capacity has now reached around 222 million tonnes per annum, positioning the industry to meet the National Steel Policy target of 300 million tonnes per annum by 2030.

In May, the state-owned steel company SAIL disclosed its FY2025-26 financial results, reporting record sales volume of 19.93 million tonnes and revenue of Rs 110,810 crore. SAIL and NMDC are actively pursuing coking coal asset acquisitions and nickel supplies in Russia, with SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant receiving Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for its TMT Bars.

SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant’s 15 MW floating solar project generates approximately 34.25 million units of clean power annually, supporting reduced carbon emissions and energy sustainability. The EPD certification enhances the plant’s environmental credibility and aligns with the rising demand for green steel in both domestic and global markets, showcasing SAIL’s commitment to sustainable steelmaking practices.
