India’s inaugural bullet train service will kick off in stages starting August 15, 2027, with the Surat-Bilimora section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor being the first high-speed rail route in the country. The 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor will be operational in parts, allowing certain sections to start before the entire route is finished. After the launch of the Surat-Bilimora stretch, other segments like Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and Ahmedabad-Mumbai will open gradually.
The Railway Ministry, quoting Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the progression of India’s first bullet train project into the next phase. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, currently under construction, is set for phased commissioning, starting with the Surat-Bilimora section. Nearly 80% of the ambitious project has been completed, with construction advancing swiftly to meet the project timeline. This high-speed rail corridor aims to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad significantly, introduce advanced rail technology, and enhance regional connectivity, fostering economic growth along the corridor.
Vaishnaw revealed the government’s long-term strategy to expand the high-speed rail network by introducing three proposed bullet train corridors centered around Hyderabad. These corridors, including Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Chennai, and Hyderabad-Bengaluru routes, are expected to improve connectivity in southern India. Additionally, a Hyderabad-Mumbai high-speed rail link is in the works, promising a substantial reduction in travel time between the two cities. The proposed network is anticipated to transform Hyderabad’s infrastructure and connectivity, covering vast areas of Telangana and enhancing connectivity across multiple districts in the state.
The Railway Minister also emphasized the government’s efforts in modernizing the railway sector through the station redevelopment program. Under the Nav-Nirmaan initiative, 261 railway stations nationwide are undergoing upgrades to provide modern passenger amenities and enhanced infrastructure. Notably, stations in Telangana such as Secunderabad, Begumpet, and HITEC City are among those being redeveloped.
