India’s floating solar PV potential has been estimated at over 102 GWp, bringing the country’s total assessed solar potential to 3,445 GWp. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi released a report highlighting this data. The Ministry is developing a dedicated scheme to encourage the deployment of floating solar projects nationwide, utilizing reservoirs and water bodies for clean energy generation.
Joshi emphasized that these efforts underscore the Government’s commitment to utilizing natural resources sustainably and efficiently while advancing India’s clean energy transition. He also launched an online portal for the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme to improve transparency and efficiency in its implementation. This marks a significant policy intervention in the small hydro sector since 2017.
Flagship programs like PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM are playing a crucial role in expanding citizen participation in India’s clean energy transition. Joshi credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and leadership for transforming India into a global clean energy leader over the past twelve years. India has become a prominent solar market, with non-fossil fuel capacity increasing from 81 GW in 2014 to 288 GW and solar capacity rising from 2.8 GW to 155 GW.
The Minister highlighted the substantial growth in domestic solar manufacturing capacity, reaching 192 GW for module manufacturing and 30 GW for cell manufacturing. India’s clean energy achievements have garnered global recognition, showcasing the country’s capability to achieve ambitious climate and energy objectives. The nation has shifted from a power-deficit to a power-surplus status while establishing itself as a significant renewable energy manufacturing center.
At an event, NISE and Military Engineering Services signed an MoU to bolster the adoption of solar energy in defense establishments. NISE will offer technical support for planning, implementing, and monitoring renewable energy projects under this collaboration. Joshi also unveiled the book “Green Energy and Sustainable Development” by Dr. Mohammad Rihan, expressing confidence in its value as a resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders.
The Minister commended NISE and its team for their contributions to research, innovation, and technical support in advancing India’s renewable energy aspirations. He believes that the initiatives launched will play a pivotal role in fostering a self-reliant and developed India powered by clean energy.
