India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Dhaka to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid respects at the High Commission in New Delhi. These visits hold significance against the backdrop of strained relations between the two countries since August 2024. The brief visits aim to pave the way for a new chapter in bilateral ties.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, expressed optimism following Jaishankar’s visit, suggesting a positive turn in India-Bangladesh relations. Hamidullah’s social media post hinted at a potential improvement in ties after the recent diplomatic engagements. The visits come amidst escalating tensions, with Hamidullah summoned back to Dhaka earlier due to bilateral strains.

Acknowledging the visits, Hamidullah highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation between India and Bangladesh. The External Affairs Minister’s meeting with Tarique Rahman, the deceased former Prime Minister’s son and BNP Acting Chairman, signifies diplomatic gestures to strengthen ties. Rajnath Singh’s homage at the High Commission underscores India’s commitment to ensuring the mission’s security.

Recent events have drawn attention to the escalating violence in Bangladesh, particularly targeting minority communities. The killings of Hindu citizens have raised concerns about the country’s ability to protect vulnerable groups. The violence, including mob lynchings and extrajudicial attacks, poses challenges to social cohesion and democratic stability ahead of the upcoming elections.

The Prothom Alo analysis highlighted the need for both countries to address uncertainties and work towards mutual cooperation. The piece emphasized the importance of reciprocal actions to ease tensions and foster a positive trajectory in bilateral relations. As uncertainties loom, the onus is on Dhaka to reciprocate and engage constructively for a stable and peaceful future.
