India’s expanding economy is set to see its energy demand surge up to three times in the next 25 years, offering a significant investment avenue and potential for technology partnerships with the United States. At a US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit panel on energy security and infrastructure, ExxonMobil’s Dr. Prasanna Joshi highlighted India’s unique growth trajectory compared to other major economies.
Joshi projected a substantial increase in India’s GDP to $25-30 trillion, emphasizing the need for massive investments across the energy value chain to support the country’s ambitious growth plans. With current electricity generation capacity at 500 gigawatts, India aims to boost this to 2,100 GW by 2047, with renewable energy emerging as a key investment sector.
Renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, presents vast opportunities for collaboration and investment in India, with the potential to increase capacity from 100 to 1,800 gigawatts. While emphasizing the importance of conventional energy sources, Joshi stressed the need for greater exploration to enhance energy security and meet the rising energy demands.
Ernie Thrasher, President and CEO of Xcoal Energy & Resources, highlighted India’s status as the largest overseas market for American coal exports, with a substantial growth in exports over the years. Thrasher emphasized the necessity of a diverse energy mix to cater to India’s escalating energy needs, pointing out opportunities for American companies in various energy technologies.
Both speakers underscored India’s position as a significant long-term investment destination, emphasizing the importance of collaboration across governments, businesses, and technology providers to support India’s infrastructure expansion and economic growth. They highlighted the need for a sustained focus on affordable energy to meet the rising living standards of India’s vast population.
The discussions took place during the ninth USISPF Leadership Summit in Washington, focusing on enhancing cooperation between India and the United States in trade, energy, technology, and strategic sectors.
