India’s economic growth is expected to be fueled by sectors in the Himalayan region that have been underexplored for years, according to Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh. Speaking at the National Technology Day event at CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT), Palampur, he highlighted the potential of the Himalayan economy in contributing significantly to India’s future economic development under the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Scientific initiatives like the Aroma Mission and Floriculture Mission, championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have gained momentum in the Himalayan region, creating opportunities for farmers, women, youth, startups, and entrepreneurs. These efforts are instrumental in harnessing the potential of Himalayan bioresources for various sectors such as medicine, wellness, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, floriculture, and agri-biotechnology.
Dr. Singh emphasized the transformative role of CSIR-IHBT in converting Himalayan bioresources into commercially viable products and technologies, catering to diverse industries including agrotechnology, biotechnology, environmental sciences, nutrition technologies, phytopharmaceuticals, and fermentation technologies. The institute, known for integrating Himalayan biodiversity, traditional knowledge, and commercial innovation, has become a key center for sustainable utilization of Himalayan resources, driving economic growth in the region.
