India’s inflation rate, based on the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) series with 2024 as the base year, increased to 3.21% in February compared to the same month last year. This marks a 0.47% rise from the revised figure of 2.74% in January when the new series was introduced.
In February, there was a notable over 10% decrease in the index of key vegetables like tomato, peas, and cauliflower compared to January. The overall food inflation for February stood at 3.47%, while housing inflation was at 2.12% compared to the previous year.
Real-time price data were collected from various urban markets and villages across all states and UTs during February 2026. The base for the Consumer Price Index has been updated to 2024 from 2012, using the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24 for the first time in January this year.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) with Base 2024=100 and corresponding weights based on the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023-24 aims to provide more detailed data for informed decision-making by policymakers, financial institutions, businesses, and citizens.
