India’s intelligence agencies are closely monitoring the India-Bangladesh border due to upcoming protests organized by Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies. The protests are set to commence on Friday in districts along the border, with a rally and procession scheduled for June 15.
During these protests, parties in Bangladesh aim to spread what Indian agencies call false information regarding India’s actions against illegal immigrants. The Jamaat has accused the Border Security Force (BSF) of killing Bangladeshi nationals near the frontier, a claim Indian officials refute as completely false.
The 11-party alliance in Bangladesh has two main objectives, according to an Intelligence Bureau official. They plan to conduct disinformation campaigns and create tensions between India and Bangladesh. Both countries have been working on improving ties since Tarique Rahman became Prime Minister earlier this year.
Indian security officials allege that the Jamaat collaborated with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) after Bangladesh’s Liberation War to facilitate large-scale illegal immigration into India. This collaboration aimed to alter demographics, fuel communal tensions, and create economic distress.
The planned protests are of concern to Indian agencies as they are being held in border districts where Jamaat holds significant influence. Indian agencies have been monitoring the situation closely, especially after the party’s electoral gains in districts bordering India.
Indian officials emphasize that they are not conducting push-ins but are repatriating illegal foreign nationals through legal procedures and bilateral agreements. The issue of illegal immigration is crucial for national security and economic stability, officials stress.
