India’s defence sector has undergone significant changes due to the “Make in India” initiative, leading to self-sufficiency in key areas and fostering international partnerships, according to Slovakia’s Ambassador to India, Robert Maxian. Maxian praised India’s progress in defence manufacturing and anticipated enhanced cooperation between India and Slovakia in defence, energy, cybersecurity, and green technologies.
The ambassador highlighted India’s strides in indigenizing its defence industry over the past three decades through the “Make in India” campaign, achieving self-reliance in various sectors. He emphasized the increasing involvement of private firms in defence production, bolstering India’s capabilities and paving the way for collaborative ventures.
Slovakia, recognized as a dependable defence technology partner, has a longstanding defence collaboration with India dating back to 1993. The two nations have engaged in supplying military equipment, joint projects on advanced technologies like flight simulators, recovery vehicles, and chemical detectors. Maxian urged defence industries from both countries to actively seek new avenues for cooperation.
The proposed trade pact aims to slash import levies gradually, reduce costs for consumers, and establish a free trade zone encompassing a substantial population. Maxian expressed hope for the agreement’s implementation by the year-end or early next year, anticipating mutual benefits. He highlighted existing collaborations in the nuclear sector and a successful biofuel initiative in Uttar Pradesh, showcasing the potential for sustainable energy solutions through Slovak-Indian partnerships.
