Myanmar holds significant importance for India’s strategic policies, including ‘Neighbourhood First’, ‘Act East’, and Indo-Pacific, as stated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his meeting with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi. President Hlaing’s choice of India for his first foreign visit was appreciated by PM Modi, who highlighted the shared values by starting the visit at Bodh Gaya with Lord Buddha’s blessings.
The discussions between the leaders encompassed enhancing collaboration in various sectors such as trade, rare earths, healthcare, connectivity, heritage restoration, and capacity building. Both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in maritime security, cybersecurity, and other critical areas to foster mutual growth and security.
President U Min Aung Hlaing reiterated Myanmar’s commitment not to allow its territory to be used against India’s security interests during the meeting. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s backing for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, extending support for the nation’s efforts in achieving peace, stability, reconciliation, and socio-economic progress.
In a separate meeting, President Droupadi Murmu conveyed India’s unwavering support for Myanmar’s peace initiatives. Emphasizing the deep-rooted Buddhist ties and historical connections between the two nations, President Murmu described Myanmar as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, underscoring the cultural and people-to-people bonds that strengthen bilateral relations.
