After leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup, Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the men’s senior selection committee, has requested an extension of his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Agarkar, who took on the role in June 2023, had his contract renewed in IPL 2025 following India’s successful performances in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
According to a report by the Times of India, a former Indian cricketer has urged the board for an extension until the 2027 World Cup following India’s recent T20 World Cup win. The report also mentioned ongoing discussions within the BCCI regarding this request, hinting at the possibility of another former Indian cricketer from the West Zone taking over Agarkar’s position.
During Agarkar’s tenure, India has clinched three major ICC trophies, including two T20 World Cups and one Champions Trophy. Despite this success in limited-overs cricket, India’s Test performances have been inconsistent, with losses in home series and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy overseas.
The disparity in performance across formats has somewhat overshadowed India’s dominance in white-ball cricket, where they have won 31 out of 33 matches and secured the Asia Cup in 2023 and 2025. Agarkar’s leadership has also witnessed significant changes, with senior players like Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli retiring from various formats, with Ashwin retiring from international cricket altogether.
