India’s smartphone manufacturing industry responded to reports of a government proposal on source code sharing, emphasizing that ongoing discussions do not signal an immediate regulatory change. The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) stated that the dialogue between the government and the industry has been ongoing for years, highlighting the need for a nuanced perspective rather than alarm. ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo reassured that there is no new development sparking concern and that engagements with the government are part of a routine consultation process.
Mohindroo clarified that the interaction between governments and industry stakeholders on technical and compliance issues is a standard practice, with companies sharing global best practices and addressing practical limitations. He underscored that the current discussions are part of a transparent and detailed consultation process, expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far. The industry leader emphasized that there is no immediate cause for worry and expressed optimism in reaching a consensus on the path forward.
The proposed security standards under the Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements, including potential access to smartphone source code, mandatory malware scanning, and advance notification of significant software updates to authorities, are part of an open and transparent consultation process. Mohindroo reiterated that the industry is content with the ongoing discussions, emphasizing the nature of transparent engagement with relevant stakeholders.
