India’s digital public infrastructure and technological advancements have set the stage for the rise of agentic AI, fueled by reliable data and streamlined processes, according to a recent report. The World Economic Forum highlighted that India’s innovative India Stack framework has played a crucial role in enhancing financial and digital inclusivity through its digital identity system, Unified Payments Interface, DigiLocker, and Account Aggregator framework. With a robust $4 trillion economy, a young tech-savvy population, and a commitment to openness, India is well-positioned to lead the way in developing scalable, sustainable, and equitable models for the future.

The Indian government is actively supporting this foundation by investing in cutting-edge computing technologies and artificial intelligence initiatives. Projects like the National Quantum Mission, aimed at building 1,000-qubit quantum computers by 2031, and the expansion of AI compute capacity with nearly 18,693 GPUs, underscore India’s commitment to technological advancement. The report emphasized that the key to ensuring equitable progress lies not just in the tools themselves but in reimagining the systems, skills, and values that govern their utilization.

Recognizing India’s efforts in reshaping technology as a public good, the report praised India Stack for its ambitious approach in combining scale, sustainability, and equity in its models. It also predicted that by 2029, AI agents could potentially manage around 45% of routine enterprise tasks, though it cautioned that a significant number of generative AI projects fail to deliver substantial financial benefits, with only a third of employees finding AI tools meeting their requirements.

Despite challenges, early adopters have reported significant productivity gains ranging from 40% to 60%. The report stressed that as agentic AI increasingly becomes the backbone of business operations, there is a growing need for new infrastructure and strong leadership to support its scalability. Analysts anticipate that AI and associated technologies will generate 170 million new job roles by 2030 while displacing 92 million jobs, underscoring the importance for businesses to invest in upskilling, develop ethical AI systems, and prioritize inclusivity.
