Gas distributor Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has announced another increase in compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in Delhi, marking the fourth hike in less than two weeks. The latest revision by IGL has raised CNG prices in Delhi by Rs 2 per kg, with the new cost set at Rs 83.09 per kg, up from Rs 81.09 per kg. This price adjustment has also affected consumers in the National Capital Region, with rates in Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Gurugram, and Ajmer seeing upward revisions.
The recent surge in CNG prices is part of a trend that has seen multiple increases in fuel rates over the past few days. This rise is expected to have a significant impact on users of CNG-powered vehicles, particularly in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, where public transport systems heavily rely on CNG. Transport operators are concerned that the higher operating costs may eventually lead to increased fares for passengers. In a parallel development, state-owned oil marketing companies have raised petrol and diesel prices for the fourth time in less than two weeks, attributing the hikes to global energy market volatility and concerns over crude oil supply amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Petrol prices in Delhi have increased by Rs 2.61 per litre, reaching Rs 102.12 per litre, while diesel prices have gone up by Rs 2.71 to Rs 95.20 per litre. Other major cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai have also witnessed substantial hikes in fuel prices. The continuous rise in fuel costs is expected to impact transportation and logistics expenses, potentially leading to higher prices for essential goods transported by road and increased daily travel expenses for consumers. Despite a reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel by the government on March 27, the upward trend in fuel prices continues.
