INS Sudarshini’s recent port call at Mindelo, Cape Verde, signifies a significant milestone for the Indian Navy’s Bridges of Friendship initiative. The visit aimed to strengthen maritime outreach and partnerships with friendly nations. During the four-day stopover, the ship engaged in professional interactions, cultural exchanges, and social engagements to enhance maritime ties between India and Cape Verde.
The Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini met with Capitao-de-Navio Kahbi Yassine Fonseca Pereira Batista, the Commander of the Cabo Verde Coast Guard, during the stay. Discussions primarily revolved around mutual interests in maritime security and opportunities for increased cooperation. Notably, the Indian Navy conducted Damage Control and Seamanship drills on the Cabo Verdean patrol vessel Guardiao, emphasizing training engagement as a significant aspect of the visit.
Furthermore, a delegation from the Cabo Verde Army visited INS Sudarshini for a guided tour to explore the ship’s sail training capabilities. A joint Yoga session was organized, involving personnel from the Cabo Verde Coast Guard and officials from the Indian Embassy, showcasing the strong bond between the two countries. An onboard reception hosted by the ship brought together senior military officers, government dignitaries, and members of the diplomatic community, fostering goodwill and camaraderie.
INS Sudarshini is now en route to Antigua for the next phase of its deployment, which includes a crucial trans-Atlantic passage, the longest leg of the voyage. The sail training ship, which embarked on its journey from Kochi in January, has already made port calls in Oman, Egypt, Malta, France, and Morocco. With a total distance of 22,000 nautical miles to cover, the Lokayan-26 expedition aims to provide sailing training to Indian Navy cadets and promote maritime goodwill globally.
