Meta-owned Instagram encountered a widespread service disruption, affecting numerous users’ ability to use essential features like messaging, profile loading, and content updates. Reports of issues surged in the evening, with complaints escalating to 1,993 at around 7:13 p.m., up from 436 reports an hour earlier. By 7:44 p.m., the number of incidents had risen to nearly 3,706, indicating a more extensive disruption.
Most impacted users faced difficulties with the Instagram mobile app, with approximately 61% of complaints related to app malfunctions. Around 19% reported server-related issues, while 11% had trouble accessing the website. Users expressed challenges in sending or receiving direct messages, encountering blank screens, profile loading errors, and messaging inboxes failing to refresh consistently.
According to Android Authority, the outage seemed to have a global reach, affecting users in various U.S. cities like New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. The disruption may have also impacted other Meta services, as some users faced loading problems and error messages on Facebook during the same timeframe.
Despite the increasing user complaints, Meta had not officially acknowledged the outage. The company’s business status dashboard displayed “No known issues” across critical platform metrics, and there was no public-facing consumer service status page. Cybersecurity experts cautioned users against repeatedly resetting passwords or clicking on account recovery links until Meta restores normal server operations, highlighting the risk of cybercriminal exploitation through phishing attempts.
