Bihar is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, impacting daily life in the state. The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for heatwave conditions in five districts of southwestern Bihar, namely Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, and Aurangabad, cautioning that the situation could pose extreme danger. Meteorologists have warned that temperatures in various districts may reach or surpass 43 degrees Celsius.
The scorching westerly winds and intense daytime heat have led to a significant decrease in outdoor activities, with streets and markets mostly deserted during the afternoon. Health experts advise residents to avoid going out between 12 P.M. and 4 P.M., as the risk of heatstroke and dehydration is highest during these hours. To combat the heat, doctors recommend staying hydrated by drinking water, lemon water, ORS, and other fluids.
While there is a forecast of slight relief in Patna with potential partial cloud cover and light rain in some regions, the humid conditions caused by easterly winds are expected to persist, maintaining discomfort levels. The maximum temperature in the capital is anticipated to hover around 38 degrees Celsius. The intense weather conditions are also affecting railway operations in Bihar, resulting in significant delays in train services.
Key trains like Magadh Express, Garib Rath Express, Patliputra Express, Vikramshila Express, Brahmaputra Mail, and Poorva Express are reportedly running behind schedule by one to three hours. The Shramjeevi Express faced the most substantial delay, arriving at Patna Junction almost three hours late on Wednesday. Passengers, especially the elderly, women, and children, are enduring prolonged waits at railway stations due to these delays, causing inconvenience.
The delays have not only impacted connecting journeys and travel plans but have also been attributed to rising temperatures, operational stress, and heat-related effects on railway tracks. Passengers have expressed frustration over the recurring disruptions every summer without any lasting solutions being implemented. The severe weather conditions are now not only affecting public health and road transport but are also disrupting the railway network, exacerbating the challenges faced by the people of Bihar.
