The internal discord within the Trinamool Congress surfaced following their significant loss in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. A number of party councillors from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) abstained from a crucial meeting called by party leader Mamata Banerjee. This occurred amidst the KMC issuing notices to properties associated with Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s General Secretary and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.
The Trinamool Congress holds a majority in the KMC board with 137 party councillors. However, only 100 councillors attended the meeting, as revealed by an anonymous councillor. Among the absentees was Debasish Kumar, the defeated KMC Member Mayor-in-Council from South Kolkata.
Despite the challenges, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee encouraged the attending councillors not to be disheartened by the lack of cooperation from the bureaucratic setup in KMC. She urged them to continue their work diligently in the altered political landscape of the state. Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee responded to the KMC’s notices regarding 17 properties owned or co-owned by him, calling for clarity on the alleged illegal constructions.
