Voting is ongoing in 152 constituencies across 16 districts in West Bengal’s Assembly polls. International delegates, accompanied by Election Commission of India officials, observed the polling process in Darjeeling district. The delegates visited polling stations in Siliguri and Matigara, appreciating the efficient management and festive atmosphere.
As part of the Election Commission of India’s international election visitors’ programme (IEVP) 2026, a 13-member delegation from various countries is in West Bengal to review the first phase of the state Assembly elections. The purpose of the IEVP is to showcase best electoral practices and enhance global cooperation with election management bodies worldwide.
In another development, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, monitored polling booths in his native constituency of Nandigram. Adhikari noted the absence of disruptions by ruling party supporters this election, attributing it to enhanced security measures. He expressed hope for a peaceful polling day.
Suvendu Adhikari is also contesting from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in South Kolkata, where he faces the incumbent Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee. Notable BJP leaders, including Agnimitra Paul and Dilip Ghosh, cast their votes early and monitored polling activities. Security personnel are maintaining a high level of vigilance to ensure peaceful polling.
