The investigation into the abduction and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore gained momentum as the second accused, Mohanraj, was presented before the Sulur Judicial Magistrate Court and remanded to judicial custody until May 27. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to unravel more details related to the incident that has sparked widespread outrage.
Two men, Karthik and Mohanraj, were previously arrested in connection with the case. Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R.V. Ramya Bharathi confirmed the arrests and mentioned that special teams are diligently investigating all aspects of the crime.
The accused individuals were reportedly acquainted with the victim’s family and allegedly enticed the child from her neighborhood under false pretenses of buying chocolates. Surveillance camera footage aided investigators in tracking down the suspects. The girl’s body was discovered in the Kannampalayam tank near Coimbatore, causing shockwaves in the district.
Karthik reportedly sustained injuries while trying to escape custody during the investigation. Authorities are examining all circumstances surrounding the incident and gathering additional evidence to strengthen the case. The brutal nature of the crime has incited anger among local residents, leading to a protest outside the Sulur police station that lasted through the night.
Senior police officials, including IG R.V. Ramya Bharathi, Deputy Inspector General of Police P. Saminathan, and Coimbatore Rural Superintendent of Police Allatipalli Pavan Kumar Reddy, oversaw the investigation conducted by special teams led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Karikal Pari Shankar. Around 300 police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order in the area.
Sulur MLA N.M. Sukumar, who visited the protest site, assured residents that justice would be served. Following the arrests, the protest dispersed, though a sense of sorrow and indignation lingers in the community.
