The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has lifted the suspension on the Russian Olympic Committee that had been in place since October 2023. However, Russian athletes rejoining international competitions must be part of a national anti-doping program managed by the International Testing Agency (ITA), as decided by the IOC. The decision was made after a detailed analysis by the IOC’s Legal Affairs Commission, noting that the ROC no longer includes regional sports organizations in territories under the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine.
The IOC stated that a decision regarding the display of the Russian flag, anthem, or any identifying symbols for the Olympic Games will be made at the appropriate time. The IOC also mentioned that it will not host events in Russia or invite Russian government officials to its events. The qualification period for the LA28 Olympic Games and the Dolomiti Valtellina 2028 Winter Youth Olympic Games has begun, and the IOC has advised International Federations and sports event organizers to no longer apply protective measures related to Russian athletes and teams.
In line with the Olympic Charter, the ROC must ensure that the selection of Russian athletes for the Olympic Games is based not only on their sports performance but also on their ability to serve as role models promoting a peaceful society through sport. To address concerns in the global sporting community about the return of Russian athletes and recent allegations regarding the Russian Anti-Doping Agency’s governance, Russian athletes must meet all relevant anti-doping requirements before participating in international competitions.
