Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, has urged the UN secretary-general and the Security Council to denounce the United States for encouraging violence and threatening force against Iran. Iravani specifically pointed to US President Donald Trump’s social media post on Truth Social, where he called on Iranian citizens to continue protesting and take control of their institutions.
In response, Trump declared the cancellation of all scheduled meetings with Iranian officials. This decision followed his earlier announcement of imposing a 25% tariff on any country engaging in business with Iran. Trump linked the suspension of diplomatic talks to the ongoing violence against protesters in Iran.
During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump emphasized the importance of ending the violence in Iran before resuming discussions with Iranian authorities. He urged Iranian protesters to persist in their demonstrations and document instances of violence for accountability purposes.
While reiterating the US preference for diplomatic solutions, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that military options were not off the table in dealing with Iran, if deemed necessary.
