Nations along the Indian Ocean are deliberating whether to impose similar restrictions on their sea routes. The US initiated ‘Project Freedom’ to address the issue, but paused due to potential peace negotiations with Iran.
The possibility of Iran imposing fees on vessels passing through its ports has prompted discussions among Indian Ocean Region countries. While no concrete policy has been articulated, nations are exploring ways to ensure freedom of navigation. Concerns have been raised by countries like Singapore and Indonesia about the potential weaponization of routes like the Strait of Malacca in response to Iran’s proposed toll charges.
Singapore’s Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of upholding UNCLOS Article 44 to prevent any disruption of transit passage in narrow sea routes. Indonesia’s President highlighted the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz and the Indonesian straits for energy needs and trade in East Asia. Indonesia’s Finance Minister suggested the possibility of collecting fees from ships passing through the Strait of Malacca, with revenue shared among Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Thailand is considering building a land bridge connecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand in response to the lessons learned from the Strait of Hormuz closure. The potential imposition of tolls by Indian Ocean countries on international straits could increase trade costs and geopolitical instability. India’s External Affairs Minister emphasized the need for collective resilience and trusted partnerships among Indian Ocean countries.
The Indian Ocean Region comprises 33 nations with a significant population and handles a substantial portion of global crude oil. For India, a large percentage of its trade passes through the region. Various narrow sea routes like Bab el-Mandeb, the Strait of Malacca, and others play a crucial role in the movement of goods in the Indian Ocean.
