A senior Iranian lawmaker suggested that Iran’s armed forces’ general staff should oversee security measures in the Strait of Hormuz under a parliamentary plan. Ebrahim Azizi, head of the national security and foreign policy committee, detailed the “Strategic Action Plan to Ensure Security and Progress in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf,” which includes provisions to control hostile vessel passages through the strait. The plan, consisting of nearly 11 articles, aims to mandate financial transactions in Iran’s currency, the rial.
Azizi emphasized that entities causing harm to Iran or impeding its assets must compensate for the losses incurred over the years. He highlighted the Iranian armed forces’ current effective management of the strait, emphasizing their adherence to directives from higher authorities. The parliamentary plan aligns with the vision of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who advocates for enhanced strait governance.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, another committee member, mentioned that the plan will swiftly transition into law upon the Iranian parliament’s reopening. The legislation will then be forwarded to the administration for implementation. Boroujerdi disclosed that the Central Bank of Iran has established specific accounts in various currencies to deposit tolls collected by the Navy of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps from passing vessels.
