The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced the beta version of its updated ticket booking website, the first major overhaul in more than 20 years, as announced by the Ministry of Railways. Users can now access the new portal to test its fresh interface and provide feedback before the final version is officially released. The beta version is currently accessible through the existing IRCTC website, with a specific link available on the homepage for user convenience.
The redesign initiative is part of a broader modernization drive by the Railways to enhance its digital ticketing system and enhance the overall booking experience for travelers. The revamp was influenced by input from students of Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), who engaged with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and offered suggestions on improving the website’s user-friendliness. Several recommendations from the students were integrated into the new platform as part of the design process.
Originally launched in 2002, the IRCTC website manages an average of approximately 14.5 lakh ticket bookings daily. The beta version brings forth a more user-friendly experience with a cleaner interface, simplified navigation, and a streamlined booking process. Notable enhancements include the removal of unnecessary captchas, pop-ups, and distracting graphics to facilitate a smoother booking process. Additionally, seat availability information is now presented across all travel classes, enabling passengers to compare options more efficiently.
The booking process has been expedited by reducing the number of checkout steps, while saved passenger details facilitate quicker and more convenient repeat bookings. The beta launch aims to collect user feedback for further platform refinement before the final version rollout. Suggestions provided by users during the trial phase will be considered for future updates. The revamped website is set to be integrated with the new Passenger Reservation Engine (PRS), which is currently undergoing upgrades in parallel. The new reservation engine, powering train bookings across various applications, has undergone extensive redevelopment to ensure uninterrupted services. The fully integrated new IRCTC portal, along with the upgraded reservation engine, is anticipated to be launched in the upcoming weeks.
