The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is using the relatives of Indian citizens in Pakistan to coerce and recruit individuals into its espionage networks, as per intelligence sources. This tactic is particularly focused on residents in Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir border districts to gather sensitive information about the Indian armed forces.
According to officials, the ISI has resorted to pressuring the families of Indian recruits in Pakistan to ensure their continued involvement in spying activities. This strategy aims to exploit the vulnerability of these relatives for recruitment and retention purposes.
Security agencies have noted a shift in focus towards Rajasthan, where the ISI is aiming to establish a more organized espionage network. The border districts of Barmer, Bikaner, and Sri Ganganagar are highlighted as key areas for espionage-related activities due to their proximity to military installations and border infrastructure.
Investigators revealed that some recruits have faced coercion to continue espionage operations, with their relatives in Pakistan being used as tools for recruitment. These family members are reportedly threatened with adverse consequences if they do not cooperate, emphasizing the coercive nature of the ISI’s tactics.
