The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Kolkata has cautioned the public about fake social media posts circulating regarding the menu for the cooked mid-day meals they will provide in state-run and state-aided schools within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) limits. Radharamn Das, the vice-president and spokesman of ISKCON, issued a statement urging people not to be misled by these false posts. He shared examples of the misleading posts to highlight their fictitious nature.
Das clarified that the menu circulating on social media, which lacked nutritious ingredients, was not finalized by ISKCON. He emphasized that the organization would officially announce the menu once it is decided. State finance minister Swapan Dasgupta recently announced the decision to engage ISKCON in providing nutritious mid-day meals in schools within the KMC area during the presentation of the state budget proposals for the financial year 2026-27.
The partnership between the state government and ISKCON aims to ensure the provision of healthy meals in these schools, with the government covering some costs while ISKCON bears the rest. Despite this, the decision faced criticism from opposition parties and segments of society who raised concerns about potential influence on students’ food habits.
