A vibrant painting depicting the ghats of Varanasi served as a cultural symbol of friendship between India and Italy as renowned Italian artist Giampaolo Tomassetti gifted it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Rome. Tomassetti described the artwork as a ‘bridge’ connecting Italian artistry with the colorful essence of India. Prime Minister Modi appreciated the painting, inquiring about the time taken to complete it.
Tomassetti shared that he spent years delving into Indian art and literature from an Italian perspective, finding India profoundly rich in culture, sculptures, and paintings. His artwork, titled ‘Holy Varanasi,’ showcases the sacred ghats of Varanasi using mixed techniques like acrylic colors, reflecting the vibrant culture of India. PM Modi praised Tomassetti’s dedication to Indian culture, particularly his work related to the Mahabharata.
Italian artist Giampaolo Tomassetti’s artistic journey, influenced by the Mahabharata, began at the age of 17 and culminated in a significant painting project lasting about 12 years. His creations include scenes like Krishna serving as Arjuna’s charioteer and Krishna’s miraculous act of lengthening Draupadi’s sari. Tomassetti’s artworks also depict various battle scenes, Krishna’s return to Dwarka, and intricate architectural details, showcasing his deep connection to Indian themes.
