Italy won the toss and chose to field against Scotland in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Group C match at the iconic Eden Gardens. Despite limited T20 international history between the two teams, their past encounters have resulted in a balanced 1-1 head-to-head record, heightening the significance of their rivalry.
Both Scotland and Italy have each won three out of their last five T20I matches. Scotland started with two wins before facing three consecutive losses, while Italy began with a victory, followed by three defeats, and then a recent win, showcasing their fluctuating form.
Italy, the latest entrant in the World Cup, brings momentum from their previous victories. Nine months ago, they secured a historic 12-run win against Scotland in the T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier and also displayed strong performances in warm-up matches against Canada and the UAE in Chennai.
Italy’s captain, Wayne Madsen, expressed optimism about the wicket, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the game and making an impact. On the other side, Scotland’s skipper, Richie Berrington, highlighted their batting strength and anticipated a competitive match against Italy, announcing one change in the playing XI with Brad Wheal replacing Sharif.
