Benegal, who passed away at the age of 90 on December 23, 2024, at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai due to chronic kidney disease, received numerous accolades for his contributions to the arts. His early works, including Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, and Bhumika, played a crucial role in shaping the new wave film movement during that era. Additionally, his “Muslim Women Trilogy” films, such as Mammo, Sardari Begum, and Zubeidaa, were honored with National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
