External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently engaged with Ambassadors from European Union (EU) member countries in New Delhi, focusing on global volatility and instability. This interaction preceded the upcoming State Visit to India by European Council President Antonio Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will be Chief Guests at the 77th Republic Day celebrations on January 26. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of strengthening India-EU ties to enhance global stability and cooperation.
The discussions highlighted the need for India-EU collaboration to mitigate risks in the world economy through resilient supply chains, offer public goods like HADR and anti-piracy operations, and bolster the global order with enhanced trade, mobility, and security partnerships. Jaishankar expressed anticipation for the visit of the EU leaders, emphasizing the strategic partnership between India and the European Union since 2004. The upcoming 16th India-EU Summit aims to deepen cooperation in various mutual interest areas.
During their visit, the EU leaders will participate in the Republic Day celebrations and co-chair the 16th India-EU Summit on January 27. They are scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu and engage in talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Additionally, an India-EU Business Forum is set to take place alongside the Summit, reflecting the expanding and deepening bilateral ties between India and the European Union. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the significance of the EU leaders’ visit in advancing the India-EU Strategic Partnership.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, affirmed Europe’s commitment to a robust agenda with India, emphasizing the forthcoming signature of a new Security and Defence Partnership during the EU-India Summit. The partnership aims to enhance cooperation in maritime security, counterterrorism, and cyber defense, underscoring the evolving strategic relationship between the EU and India.
