External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in New Delhi before the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Jaishankar emphasized the strong strategic partnership between India and Japan, focusing on their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific.
During the meeting, Jaishankar expressed eagerness to discuss bilateral cooperation, global and regional issues, and economic security concerns, especially given their roles as energy importing and trading nations with maritime interests. The two ministers were joined by officials including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Japan’s Ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi.
Motegi acknowledged the significant global structural changes post-World War II, emphasizing the evolving balance of power and escalating conflicts. He praised Jaishankar’s remarks on the shared responsibility of Japan and India in shaping the international order. Motegi highlighted the importance of updating the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) policy to enhance regional resilience and prosperity.
The Japanese Foreign Minister also mentioned his upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participation in the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. Motegi outlined the Quad’s role in promoting cooperation for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the need for strategic discussions among the four countries to align perspectives and deepen cooperation efforts.
