External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York. They covered significant global matters, such as conflicts in West Asia, Ukraine, and Sudan. The meeting coincided with India’s launch of its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2028–2029.
During the high-level meeting at the UN Headquarters, Jaishankar and Guterres emphasized the importance of India’s diplomatic efforts to garner support from UN member states for the upcoming Security Council election. Jaishankar shared insights from the discussion, highlighting the robust India-UN collaboration and the focus on urgent international crises.
India’s UNSC candidature was officially announced by Jaishankar, outlining a six-point vision named SHANTI. This vision underscores India’s commitment to promoting global peace and security through a holistic approach centered on norms, trust, and integrity. Jaishankar emphasized India’s role as a representative of the Global South and its dedication to supporting developing nations and enhancing multilateral institutions.
The SHANTI framework sets out key priorities for India’s campaign, including amplifying the Global South’s voice in global security, advocating for a reformed and effective multilateral system, and enhancing peacekeeping capabilities with modern technology. India also aims to champion a human-centric approach to artificial intelligence, uphold a rules-based maritime order, and intensify efforts against terrorism and terror financing globally.
Jaishankar affirmed India’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and bridging differences while advocating for reforms that align with current global realities. India’s focus includes advancing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda and ensuring peacekeeping missions stay aligned with their core objectives. India is vying for the Asia-Pacific non-permanent seat on the UNSC for 2028–2029, aiming for its ninth term as an elected member.
