Jakub Mensik, a 20-year-old player, caused a significant upset in the Qatar Open by defeating World No. 2 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 event. Mensik secured a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 victory over Sinner, marking the most significant win of his career based on ATP ranking. Notably, two years ago, Mensik achieved his first Top 5 victory against Andrey Rublev during his breakthrough performance in Doha.

The 2025 Miami champion, Mensik, has a record of 4-2 against Top 5 opponents, including wins against Novak Djokovic and Sinner. As a result of his impressive performance in Doha, Mensik has climbed three spots to No. 13 in the ATP Live Rankings, as reported by ATP. Mensik expressed his respect for Sinner’s talent before their match, highlighting his winning mindset and determination to secure victory.

Mensik is set to compete for a spot in the final in Doha for the second time as he faces 21-year-old Fils on Friday. Meanwhile, Frenchman Fils, who recently returned to action after a back injury, achieved his first tour-level semi-final appearance since last April by defeating Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-3. Fils expressed satisfaction with his performance post-injury, emphasizing the need to continue improving and fighting in each match.
