Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced his trip to New Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The discussions will cover crucial topics such as statehood, the powers of the Lieutenant Governor, and reservation issues. Abdullah emphasized that regaining statehood is a gradual process and not a quick outcome of a single meeting.
He highlighted the importance of realistic expectations regarding the statehood matter, a significant demand in Jammu and Kashmir since its downgrade to a Union Territory in 2019. Apart from statehood, Abdullah plans to address various governance and constitutional issues arising between the elected government and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s office.
Abdullah also mentioned concerns about administrative matters like business rules, the Advocate General, and reservations that the LG has referred to Delhi. He defended the current arrangement where telecommunications powers remain with the LG for security and law-and-order reasons.
The ongoing discussions on power distribution between the elected government and the LG’s administration within the Union Territory context have been a focal point. Abdullah clarified his recent remarks on liquor shops in Kashmir, aiming to dispel political controversies. He assured that the government does not intend to expand the alcohol business, respecting religious sentiments that prohibit liquor consumption.
The Chief Minister emphasized that no new liquor shops have been opened under his administration to prevent youth from falling into addiction. He criticized the Opposition for misinterpreting his statements for political gain. Abdullah also acknowledged actor-politician Vijay’s recent political entry and reiterated his stance on government formation based on the single-largest party principle.
Regarding speculations about Cabinet expansion and reshuffling in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah stated that decisions would be made at the appropriate time. The upcoming meeting between Abdullah and Amit Shah in Delhi holds significance in the political arena, especially concerning statehood restoration and power-sharing dynamics in the Union Territory.
