The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced summer vacation for schools in Jammu division due to the prevailing heatwave conditions. Summer vacations for schools in the Summer Zone of Jammu Division will start from June 1 for Primary Classes and from June 8 for students of Classes 6 to 12, as stated by Sakina Itoo, Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister.
The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has issued a heatwave advisory urging people to stay indoors as temperatures in the city are expected to reach up to 45 degrees Celsius. Authorities are particularly concerned about the elderly and children, advising them to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime hours.
Amid rising summer temperatures in Kashmir, authorities are cautioning against prolonged exposure to heat, which could lead to dehydration, exhaustion, and heat-related illnesses. The JMC has deployed water sprinkling vehicles in various parts of the city to lower surface temperatures and provide temporary relief to commuters and pedestrians.
Officials recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, using umbrellas or head coverings, and avoiding direct sunlight exposure. It is advised to keep homes well-ventilated, consume enough fluids, and take precautions to prevent dehydration, especially for children, elderly individuals, and those with health issues.
The JMC emphasizes the dangers of leaving children or elderly persons in parked vehicles, as enclosed vehicles can quickly become dangerously hot in the prevailing weather conditions. Field workers and sanitation staff are also advised to take regular hydration breaks while working outdoors.
Data from the Meteorological Centre Srinagar indicates that Srinagar experienced a maximum temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius, slightly below normal for this time of year. Meanwhile, Jammu recorded a maximum temperature of 39.9 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal for the season.
