The Jammu and Kashmir Police have initiated a thorough investigation into the background of Kamal Singh Jamwal, the assailant who targeted Dr Farooq Abdullah at a wedding function. Authorities are delving into the assailant’s personal, social, and potential organizational connections to determine the motive behind the attack. Dr Abdullah, along with Deputy CM Surinder Chaudhary and advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, narrowly escaped the assassination attempt when the assailant fired at him from behind.
Security personnel swiftly intervened to prevent the attack, recovering a licensed pistol from the assailant’s possession. Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, reportedly confessed to waiting for an opportunity to target Dr Abdullah for the past two decades. Police are scrutinizing his recent activities and movements leading up to the incident, with senior officers currently questioning him about his livelihood and recent actions.
In light of the incident, security measures at the venue are under review to ascertain how the attacker managed to enter the function armed. Various political figures, including BJP leader Ravinder Raina and National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, have condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation into the security lapses. Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti also expressed shock over the incident, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive probe into the matter.
