World No.2 Tennis player Jannik Sinner encountered eight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt after a strong start at the Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating Ugo Humbert in straight sets to advance to the third round on Tuesday. Sinner, participating in his first Monte Carlo Masters 1000, faced Frenchman Humbert in a second-round match, with Bolt supporting him from the stands on Court Rainier III. Following his victory, Sinner met Bolt, expressing gratitude in a video by the ATP tour and acknowledging Bolt’s presence at the tennis courts.
The renowned sprinter Bolt, who clinched eight Olympic gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4×100-meter relay across the Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016 Olympics, has been in Monaco for a few days. Bolt arrived to witness the opening Centre Court match between Matteo Berrettini and Roberto Bautista Agut, which ended swiftly due to the Spaniard’s withdrawal. Additionally, Bolt attended a high-profile Ligue 1 match between AS Monaco and Olympique de Marseille during his visit.
Meanwhile, Sinner continued his impressive performance from hardcourts to clay, securing a dominant 6-3, 6-0 victory in Monaco. The Italian aims not only for his first ATP Masters 1000 title on clay this week but also to reclaim the top ranking from defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. Humbert, who displayed promise in the initial round, started strongly but was outplayed by Sinner’s baseline power and precision, leading to Sinner’s control over the match.
Sinner further elevated his game in the second set, allowing his opponent only six points throughout, showcasing his dominance as he progressed comfortably. This win extended his exceptional streak at the Masters 1000 level, having now won 36 consecutive sets since last season.
