The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s government for overlooking historical lessons and whitewashing past crimes. Zakharova highlighted that Takaichi’s act of sending offerings to the Yasukuni Shrine, known for its association with Japanese militarism and wartime aggression, disregarded the suffering of neighboring countries during World War II. She emphasized the administration’s failure to learn from history and its attempt to downplay past atrocities.
Zakharova urged Japan to acknowledge the outcomes of World War II fully and to refrain from hastening remilitarization efforts. She also expressed concerns over Japan’s relaxation of arms export restrictions, noting that it contradicts the country’s pacifist principles enshrined in its constitution. Additionally, Zakharova criticized Japan’s involvement in joint military exercises with the United States, stating that such actions contribute to escalating tensions in the Asia Pacific region.
Over 100 Japanese government officials and lawmakers recently visited the Yasukuni Shrine, where 14 Class-A Japanese war criminals from World War II are honored alongside other war dead. These visits, including a ritual offering by Prime Minister Takaichi, sparked criticism within Japan. The actions of Japanese officials at the shrine, including visits and monetary offerings, have drawn widespread condemnation, with concerns raised about the implications of such gestures.
