Ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will lead the Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2026 face-off against Punjab Kings at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. This decision comes as regular captain Hardik Pandya and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav are unavailable for the match. Bumrah, a long-standing member of MI since 2013, will be captaining the team for the first time in the IPL.
The leadership role was assigned to Bumrah by the franchise, as confirmed by an IPL source. Bumrah, known for his bowling prowess, has previously led India in Test matches, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests in Australia and the Birmingham Test against England. Hardik Pandya is sidelined due to back spasms, while Suryakumar Yadav is with his newborn daughter, Riddhima.
Bumrah’s IPL 2026 performance has been challenging, with only three wickets in 11 matches and a high economy rate of 8.5. Both Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings had to curtail their practice sessions due to unfavorable weather conditions. Despite this, the match is expected to proceed as scheduled without weather interruptions.
In their previous encounter, Punjab Kings successfully chased down a target of 196 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. With Mumbai Indians already out of the playoff race, Punjab Kings are aiming to break their four-game losing streak in the tournament.
