A leader of the Jatiyatabadi Swechasebak Dal in Bangladesh was fatally shot by gunmen in Dhaka. Azizur Rahman Mosabbir, a Joint Convener of the party’s Dhaka North unit, was attacked while having tea with a colleague near the Bashundhara City Shopping Mall. The gunmen arrived on motorcycles, fired shots, and quickly fled the scene.
Local reports stated that Mosabbir and another individual were rushed to BRB Hospital and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Sadly, Mosabbir was pronounced dead by doctors. The injured person, identified as Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, a group of angry individuals blocked the SAARC Foara intersection in Karwan Bazar, disrupting traffic. The army intervened later in the night, dispersing the protesters and restoring traffic flow. This incident adds to the recent wave of violence in Bangladesh, including the shooting of Islamist student leader Sharif Osman Hadi in December.
Bangladesh police have described Hadi’s killing as a “politically motivated murder” and have implicated a group of individuals in connection with the case. The deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh has been a growing concern, with protests and violent incidents on the rise since the interim government took office in August 2024.
