Janata Dal (United) National Working President, Sanjay Kumar Jha, confirmed that Nitish Kumar had been elected as the party’s National President in a previous meeting and was later endorsed by the JD(U) National Council, marking a completed organizational process. Nishant Kumar, a new party member and Bihar government minister, is set to lead the party in the future, transitioning from his current government role to organizational responsibilities.
During the National Council meeting on June 21, 2026, party leaders unanimously approved Nitish Kumar’s election as National President. Nitish Kumar expressed gratitude to council members for their support and endorsement, emphasizing the party’s commitment to “development with justice” that has led to over 10 million primary memberships.
Reflecting on Bihar’s progress since 2005, Nitish Kumar highlighted the state’s transformation from backwardness and governance challenges to inclusive development. Senior party leaders, including Deputy Chief Ministers Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary, and all JD(U) MPs attended the meeting, where Vijay Kumar Choudhary praised Nishant Kumar’s entry into organizational work for bringing new energy and direction to the party.
JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad briefed the media on resolutions passed during the meeting, lauding Nitish Kumar’s decision to step down as Chief Minister as a display of political integrity and cooperative spirit. The smooth transfer of responsibilities was hailed as a unique tradition in Indian politics. Additionally, Sanjay Kumar Jha commented on subsidy payments being transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to farmers affected by natural disasters, emphasizing the prompt assistance provided under Nitish Kumar’s leadership.
