Differences have surfaced within Jharkhand’s ruling alliance regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress are in disagreement over seat-sharing. Congress named Pranav Jha as its candidate for one of the two Rajya Sabha seats, while JMM decided to field candidates for both seats.
A meeting held at Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence saw JMM legislators and senior leaders authorizing Soren to make the final decision. Party leaders Yogendra Prasad and Hafizul Hasan stated that there was a unanimous view among MLAs supporting JMM’s decision to contest both seats. The party plans to announce its candidates before June 8.
JMM, being the largest political party in the state, asserts a natural claim over both seats. This move contradicts Congress’s announcement of Pranav Jha as its candidate, creating tensions within the alliance. Despite previous discussions, the disagreement over seat-sharing has brought long-standing differences between the allies to light.
The ruling alliance, with sufficient numbers in the Jharkhand Assembly, faces uncertainty due to the standoff over candidates. The ongoing tussle between Congress and JMM has become the primary political focus in the state as the nomination process progresses. All eyes are now on the next steps of Hemant Soren and the Congress leadership as the election for 24 Rajya Sabha seats approaches on June 18.
