The Jharkhand High Court emphasized the safety, health, and rights of coal mine workers during a recent session. Concerned about the well-being of these workers, the court directed the state’s Chief Inspector of Factories to attend the upcoming hearing personally. This move follows the Supreme Court’s strict directives on mine worker safety and the importance of their health and well-being.

The Supreme Court’s proactive stance on mine worker safety prompted all High Courts nationwide to monitor the issue. In response, the Jharkhand High Court has initiated proceedings to ensure compliance with safety standards in major coal mines and factories. Despite the state government’s submission of a review report, the court expressed dissatisfaction with the existing gap between safety norms and on-ground conditions.

During the hearing, the court stressed the need for stringent enforcement of safety regulations in mines and the provision of adequate medical facilities for workers. It also highlighted the importance of eradicating illegal mining activities. Additionally, the court demanded detailed information from the state government on efforts to regularize contract workers, ensure minimum wage payments, and implement welfare schemes for mine workers.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the High Court instructed the Chief Inspector of Factories to personally attend the next hearing. The court seeks clarification on the steps taken to implement its directives and enhance the safety of coal mine workers.
