The 27-day budget session of the J&K Legislative Assembly is commencing on Monday, with expectations of a contentious atmosphere as the opposition gears up to challenge the ruling National Conference government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Key issues likely to dominate discussions include the regularization of daily wagers, the government’s performance and achievements since the last budget, and the restoration of statehood to J&K.

Omar Abdullah, who also serves as the Finance Minister, is slated to present the budget in the assembly on February 6. Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha will address the session, with preparations emphasizing smooth proceedings and efficient time management. Security arrangements have been finalized, with Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather coordinating with relevant officials.

An all-party meeting was convened to enhance the session’s effectiveness for the public benefit, with the Business Advisory Committee finalizing the schedule. The assembly is expected to operate in a double-shift mode to maximize time utilization. The opposition’s role in scrutinizing the government and ensuring accountability was highlighted, emphasizing constructive criticism based on solid grounds.

This budget session marks the second term for the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government, with the session scheduled to conclude on April 4 in three phases. Opposition parties, including the BJP, PDP, and Congress, are poised to question the government on unfulfilled promises and the implementation of previous budget commitments. Expectations are high for a session marked by intense debates and challenges to the government on various issues.
