Srinagar, Aug 13 (IANS) Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday arrested two persons for extorting money from a man by threatening to falsely implicate him in an NDPS case.

An official statement said that Anantnag police arrested two persons after receiving a complaint of extortion.

Police Station Srigufwara received the complaint from Ajaz Ahmad Shah, son of Mohd Maqbool, a resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan, alleging that the accused persons had demanded and received Rs 24,000 from him and threatened to implicate him in a false NDPS case if he failed to pay the amount.

Upon receiving the complaint, police verified the allegations and found that the complainant was not involved in any such case.

Accordingly, a case was registered at Police Station Srigufwara under FIR No. 68/2026, under Sections 308(2)(6), 318(4) and 351(2) BNS.

During the course of investigation, police identified and arrested both accused persons, namely Muzafar Ahmad Mir, son of Ghulam Mohd Mir, resident of Veer Nowbugh Bijbehara, and Jan Mohd Wagay, son of Gh. Rasool, resident of Pethi Nambal Mattan.

“The arrests mark a swift police response to the complaint and reaffirm Anantnag Police’s commitment to protecting citizens from intimidation, extortion and misuse of criminal threats,” the police statement said.

Recent extortion cases in Kashmir include high-profile political arrests and local police clampdowns on individuals using false legal threats to extract money from residents.

Recently, police booked BJP District President Showkat Gayoor Andrabi for demanding Rs 5 lakh and forcibly taking Rs 54,000 from a businessman. He allegedly blocked soil-transporting vehicles and threatened the operators with the Public Safety Act (PSA). The BJP leadership officially suspended him following the FIR.

The Special Crime Wing of the J&K Police busted a major syndicate operating across Srinagar and Ganderbal. The scammers used fake complaints and threats of arrest to extort over Rs 30 lakh from a senior citizen. Multiple raids were launched against the four primary accused.
