The J&K Students Association (JKSA) reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the recent assault on a Kashmiri shawl seller in Uttarakhand. The association highlighted a concerning trend of identity-based harassment against Kashmiri traders, shawl sellers, laborers, and students in various North Indian states. The incident in Dehradun, where an 18-year-old Kashmiri youth was brutally attacked while selling shawls, prompted the urgent plea for intervention.

The victim, along with his family, faced violence after being questioned about their identity and origin, leading to severe injuries including a fractured arm and head wounds requiring 13 stitches. The assault, described as not just a criminal act but a reflection of identity-based violence, has raised alarms about the safety and security of Kashmiris in different regions. The JKSA emphasized that such incidents not only jeopardize individual well-being but also challenge India’s core values of unity and inclusivity.

The association pointed out a series of similar incidents targeting Kashmiri individuals in states like Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, creating an environment of fear and insecurity among the community. Kashmiri students and traders are reportedly living in constant fear and distress, with many forced to abandon their education or livelihood due to repeated acts of violence. The letter to the Home Minister underscored the urgent need to address these issues to prevent further alienation and uphold the constitutional rights and dignity of all citizens.

Highlighting the historical role of Kashmiris as integral members of the Indian Union, the association stressed the importance of protecting their rights and ensuring their safety across the country. The plea for government intervention aimed to restore confidence among affected families, deter future acts of violence, and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to upholding the dignity and security of every individual, irrespective of their background.
